Stop exporting spreadsheets: why your business needs a dashboard
If you're still exporting data to answer basic questions about your business, a dashboard does it in one screen. Here's what a good one looks like and what it's worth.
Here's a question that comes up more than it should: "how many bookings did we take last month?" Most business owners can't answer it without opening three different apps, exporting a couple of spreadsheets and doing the maths by hand. By the time they have the number, it's next month.
That's the problem a dashboard solves. One screen that shows the numbers that matter, live, without anyone exporting anything.
What a good dashboard actually is
Not a prettier spreadsheet. A dashboard is a view of your business designed around the questions you actually ask. Bookings, revenue, enquiries, stock, staffing - whatever your version of "how are we doing" means, it's all in one place, updated automatically from the systems you already use.
The best ones I've built share three features:
- They pull from the apps you already run, so nothing gets typed in twice
- They answer the questions you ask every week, not the ones that sound impressive
- They're boring in the best way: reliable, always right, no maintenance
What it's worth
Time is the obvious saving. If answering "how are we doing?" takes two people an hour a week, that's over a hundred hours a year. But the bigger win is decisions made on real numbers instead of a feeling. One client I built a booking dashboard for stopped missing clashes entirely - the board sorted it before anyone had to notice. Another runs marketing spend on data rather than guesswork.
Where to start
You don't need a dashboard for everything. Pick the three or four numbers you'd want if you could only look at one screen, and start there. If that means connecting your bookings and your calendar and your invoicing into a single live view, that's a job I can do in days, not months.
If your business is still living in exported spreadsheets, let's talk - or see the kind of software and dashboards I build for clients across the UK. I work with businesses anywhere in the country, from Aberdeen to London.
